Al-Jawf, oasis region in western Yemen is bordered by the far-southwest extension of the Rubʿ al-Khali, the great sandy desert of the Arabian Peninsula. The Wadi Al-Jawf, an intermittent stream with headwaters in the mountains of the Yemen Highlands, crosses the area; its western and southern branches are small perennial streams. Al-Jawf was the core area of one of the most ancient of the South Arabian kingdoms.

At a time when the looting of pre-Islamic archaeological sites in the Jawf region has accelerated, a letter was sent in December 2003 to the President of the Republic of Yemen by M. Jean Leclant, perpetual secretary of the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres de Paris, co- signed by the heads of foreign archaeological missions in Yemen, in cooperation with the General Organization of Antiquities and Museums (GOAM). Following this letter, Dr. Yûsuf 'Abdallâh, In March 2004, the President of the GOAM entrusted Mr. Mounir Arbach and Mr. Rémy Audouin with a mission to Prospecting to take stock of the sites in the Jawf region.
With the exception of the Baraqish site, which is protected by the Yemeni government, the Jawf sites are inaccessible for the past fifteen years and have been subjected to destruction and looting that fuels international trafficking antiques. The most affected sites are Ma'in, Kharibat Hamdan, Kamna, al-Baydā' and as-Sawdā'. Other smaller sites are also affected by this scourge, such as Hizmat Abi Thawr, Inabba', Shaqab al- Manassa, Darb as-Sabî and Jidfir Ibn Munaykhir.
The survey and assessment mission in the Jawf was carried out under difficult conditions. Only the sites of Ma'in, ancient Qarnaw, as-Sawdā', ancient Nashshān and al-Baydā', formerly Nashq, were able to be visited. The situation there is alarming. During this mission, which lasted several days, a partially looted intramural temple was discovered at the site of as-Sawda'. This temple, dedicated to the god nashshânide Aranyada', has as a peculiarity pillars decorated with bas-reliefs evoking Mesopotamian iconography.
A detailed report was submitted to the GOAM and the Presidency of the Republic, through the intermediary of Dr. 'Abd al-Karîm al-Iryânî, Political Advisor to the President of the Republic of Yemen. The Fund Yemeni Development Fund has agreed to fully fund a rescue operation for this country. The only temple in South Arabia that took place in July 2004. Several publications concerning This temple, including two booklets funded by the SDF, have already been launched and conferences have been held were also given.
During this mission to rescue the intramural temple of as-Sawda', the inhabitants of the village of as-Sawdā' have brought us nearly 500 archaeological and epigraphic pieces, most of which come from the same site. With the agreement of GOAM and in coordination with the Jawf Governorate and the Guard All these pieces have been deposited in the National Museum of San'â'.
Among the salvaged masterpieces is a pillar from the intramural temple discovered just recently at al-Sawdā', three pillars from a temple in Kamna, a libation table dating from the middle of the eighth century B.C. and finally 130 sticks containing valuable information about life of Nashshânid society. It goes without saying that the other pieces are also of great interest in the history of the Jawf region during the first millennium BC.
An application for financial assistance was submitted to UNESCO in 2005 in order to set up a project to save the site of as-Sawdâ' and an endangered archaeological find. Favourably received, it was In March 2005, a team was set up from the National Museum of San'â', under the leadership of the responsibility of M. Arbach and R. Audouin, for photography, restoration, recording, the inventory and finally the study of the pieces.
Of the 500 pieces in the collection, 298 are published here. There are 52 monumental pieces, 4 of which are pillars and 48 stone blocks, altars and libation tables, 4 of which are devoid of inscriptions. Additionally, 13 anthropomorphic and zoomorphic statues, 3 bronze objects, 36 pieces of stone tableware and 48 ceramics and 146 funerary steles. Other unpublished ones include 130 rods and 72 Ceramics.
It is difficult for us to publish all the pieces right now. Indeed, the inscribed rods are in the process of restoration and will take time to have a thorough understanding and to produce a scientific publication. These rods will be the subject of a volume at a later date. The same applies to all the ceramics (about 156 pieces), which will be the subject of a study in the one volume by J. Schiettecatte and H. Dridi. The fragmentary pillars from as-Sawda' and Kamna, finally, will be published in detail, after restoration, by M. Arbach and R. Audouin.
We would therefore like to reiterate that the publication of this catalogue is only the first step in a long research project. We felt it necessary to publish this catalogue in French and Arabic in order to make this data available to as many people as possible.
The texts accompanying the pieces are succinct. Not yet numbered from the National Museum of San'a', we have given the acronym al-Jawf 04. ; The latter corresponds to the region where The pieces were picked up and in the year they were acquired by the Museum. We have provided for each piece photographs it, the provenance when the inscriptions allow it, the dimensions, the language of the inscriptions, an approximate date and finally a description. For inscriptions, texts are presented in South Arabian characters, followed by a transcript, a translation and a short comment. For funerary stelae, which contain only the name of the deceased, only the transcription names are provided. An introduction to onomastics is given at the beginning of the chapter devoted to funerary stelae.
The dates given to the inscriptions, with the exception of late texts dated according to known reigns, such as those from al-Baydā' (al-Jawf 4:13, 14 and 15), are approximate and are based on the palaeography, or on the mention of the names of sovereigns, or on internal criteria, such as the Pantheon and language.
The importance of all the pieces studied in this catalogue lies in the fact that it covers, With the exception of a few pieces from the first centuries of the Christian era, the period from the eighth century to the eighteenth century. in the 1st century B.C. However, this period is still largely unknown to us. The few pieces from the sites of Kamna and as-Sawdā' provide new chronological data on the the establishment of the South Arabian kingdoms in general and over these two cities in particular, around the 8th century. BC. For the first time, the ceramics in this collection provide a coherent and intact whole which makes it possible to establish a ceramic typology of the Jawf region. Finally, the funerary stelae provide new data on South Arabian funerary practices, as well as new insights on South Arabian onomastics in the 1st millennium BC.
These new archaeological and epigraphic pieces from the sites of the Jawf region have been saved from plunder. Some of them are of exceptional quality and underline the urgency of the situation.
First of all, we call on the Yemeni government, international organizations, the scientific community and, finally, to all those who have any interest in history and culture. civilization of South Arabia to protect and save this archaeological heritage.
There is an urgent need for this Yemeni heritage to be safeguarded, protected and studied. Making a project of this magnitude possible requires the cooperation between relevant Yemeni institutions, international organizations such as UNESCO and international archaeological missions carrying out excavations in Yemen.

(April 5, 2024) This text is blaming lazy eagle vultures for a drought. This laziness is caused by a lack of energizing power from the hermaphrodite motion god Thu. This lack is ultimately traced back to a fate curse from the heavenly bodies. Yet emotion magic can be used to overcome this curse by providing energy to the eagle vultures who edit the life network.
